Statistics on sexual assault
Canadian Stats on Sexual Assault:

A Canadian study shows that 1 in 2 girls and 1 in 3 boys will experience unwanted sexual acts by age 18. (10)

In Greater Victoria, 35% of girls and 16% of boys in grades 7 through12 had been sexually and/or physically abused. (2)

54% of girls under the age of 16 have experienced some form of unwanted sexual attention. 24% have experienced rape or coercive sex, and 17% have experienced incest.(1)

In 2000, 77% of female victims of sexual assault were assaulted by someone they knew, including a friend, casual acquaintance, family member, partner, or ex-partner. 23% of female victims were assaulted by a stranger. (8)

In a 1993 study, 25% of female post secondary students had been physically and or sexually assaulted by a male date or boyfriend.(1)

20% of female post secondary students said they gave into unwanted sexual intercourse because they were overwhelmed by a man’s continued arguments and pressure (5)

83% of women with disabilities will be assaulted in her lifetime (1)

Up to 75% of victims of sex crimes in Aboriginal communities are female and under 18 years old. (1)

Only 6% of all sexual assaults are reported to the police. It is estimated that only 1% of acquaintance assaults are reported to police. (3)

84% of victims of sexual assault are girls and 97% of the perpetrators are male. (4)

61% of girls with eating disorders have reported sexual abuse. (4)

In a report by the Police Division, BC Ministry of Attorney General, found in 1994 that 5% of sexual assault reports were classified as “false allegations”. This is the same false allegation rate as other crimes.

 

Substance Use, Sexual Assault and other risks:

Alcohol is involved in 30% to 90% of all sexual assaults. Illicit drugs are estimated at 13% to 42%. (7)

A study done with college students found that up to 75% of all acquaintance assaults involved alcohol. (7)

89% of sexually active young people 15 to 24 say people their age are mixing substance use and sexual activity.(6)

29% of sexually active young people 15 to 24 say they have “done more” sexually than they had planned while drinking or using drugs.(6)

23% of sexually active young people 15 to 24 report having had unprotected sex because they were drinking or doing drugs. (6)

 

In Greater Victoria:

58% of girls and 35% of males say they experienced unwanted sexual comments, jokes or gestures directed at them. (9)

36% of girls and 17% of males experienced unwanted sexual touching. (9)

25% of males, and 26% of females aged 12 to 19 say they have ever had sexual intercourse. (9)

15% of girls in the region report being sexually abused. Numbers for males were too low to estimate accurately. (9)
